It shouldn't do that.
Which protocol is this? Jabber? MSN? AIM?
Are you logged in more then once? (if jabber, what are the "resources" set to?)
Are you using any other non-standard plugins that might be doing things to the message?
I am currently using gaim beta4 and have no such problems.
