There are no credentials if you have Tor running and want to use the
Socks/Privacy option within Pidgin. However, one doesn't have to use an
hidden service, although, I guess one should use one if the service
offers one. One could also connect over Tor to a clearnet Jabber service.

The difference is, your connection stays within the Tor network if you
use the Hidden Service. And otherwise, the traffic pop out at an Tor
exit node onto a jabber service.

I have to clarify that, the hidden service (okj7xc6j2szr2y75.onion) you
see is for jabber.ccc.de and below is a proxy I use at riseup.net for
file transfers. It's merely a proxy. It's probably not even a sane
configuration I have going on here. So I wouldn't recommend applying the
same thing.

I'm not sure if I would suggest anyone to register to jabber services
with a Tor Hidden Service, i'm only aware of 3 or 4 services which
offers such a service. It depends on your use-case of course. I'm a
happy user of jabber services with Tor Hidden Services.

All the best,
Jurre
