[OTR-users] Why is the whitespace protocol so verbose?

I just had to switch OTR off because the person I was chatting with
complained about all the whitespace after each message. It's supposed to be
invisible, but clearly isn't. Is there a reason such long expanses of
whitespace are used as the OTR trigger? Could a shorter version be used
instead, like three unicode RTL direction change characters in a row?
