You are mixing two things up here...one thing being OTR initiation and OTR
authentication the other.  irssi-otr's "/otr auth" command is NOT used to
initiate OTR but to initiate authentication over an already established OTR
session. The way irssi-otr currently operates (policy opportunistic) you can
just write "hello" and an OTR session should be initiated. This might take some
time though, e.g. if you use ICQ via bitlbee. Once a secure session is
established you can start authentication via "/otr auth <secret>" or from
pidgin, should work both ways.
