You're forgetting all the Gmail users who'll also have a Google Talk 
account.  Gtalk uses Jabber, but most people should already know that

You're referring to Empathy which uses Telepathy as its backend.  Both 
Fedora and Ubuntu are switching to using Empathy as the default IM 
client, so the situation is much worse than you imagined.
