Ian is right that there's really no such thing as guaranteed delivery
in IM systems (that's something offered by high-end enterprise
messaging technologies like Tibco). However, in the XMPP community
we've put quite a bit of thought into making IM more reliable. Some
examples (not implemented in all servers or clients, but we're making
progress):
