Well, pidgin -d tells me a lot of stuff, most of which I can't
intepret. Exactly what is it that I'm looking for? Any particular line
or strings?

And I downloaded and compiled/installed the 3.1.0 versions of the
libraries from the website. I also ran /sbin/ldconfig and added
'include /usr/local/lib' to /etc/ld.so.conf. I've always had trouble
getting new libraries recognised.
