I would like to report that at least on my Windows XP SP2 box in a custom patched build of gaim2.0.0cvs gaim OTR works, but its GUI representation (the buttons) don't look nice. Once I also managed to get it to insert multiple same buttons in one window. The main reason why am I writting this email is the following bug: If I talk with someone under gaim OTR and after the conversation I want to close it's conversation window (the tab) gaim segfaults. Currently I don't have enough time to test it under normal gaim2.0.0beta3 or try to recompile gaim OTR... I read somewhere in the archives that the next version of gaim OTR won't be released until gaim2.0.0 is. Imho it will take quite some time before it will be released, but it's slowly getting stable. So, why don't you do a beta-release with extra debuging options active (if the gaim peolpe can do beta releases, why shouldn't you) - a beta plugin for a beta program)? Hm, but on the other hand this would produce a lot of not needed bug reports and corrections (because maybe the stable release of gaim will be different). Anyway, the plugin looks promissing and keep up the good work. gw From mike@technomonkey.net Mon Jul 17 00:27:24 2006 From: mike@technomonkey.net (mike@technomonkey.net) Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 16:27:24 -0700 Subject: [OTR-users] Proxy port config file - where for win? Unless the packager for FC5 did something funny, it should also be opening /dev/random. libgcrypt recommends using GCRY_VERY_STRONG_RANDOM (i.e. /dev/random) for long-term keys, and GCRY_STRONG_RANDOM (i.e. /dev/urandom) for session keys. If your machine is freezing up, it means that for some reason, /dev/random hasn't accumulated enough entropy, and is blocking the app (i.e. gaim) until it does. So things like jiggling the mouse, disk accesses, etc. should make it go at some point. However, it's been noted before that some implementations of virtual private servers have a broken /dev/random that never returns anything. Thanks for the feedback. It's a real box, but, well apparently I wasn't waiting long enough. Your suggestion about not enough entropy was probably correct. I started up some audio apps, setiathome, and a bunch of other apps, and even then it took about 15 seconds. I did not do anything funny :) I have noticed however, that on VIA cpu's with hw_random.ko loaded, which means you get a new /dev/hw_random dvice, that the /dev/random device stops producing any random. I also noticed in newer linux kernels, /dev/hw_random seems obsoleted for /dev/hwrng, though a softlink is still made. Finally, I noticed that with udev, those devices are made in mode 700, which means only root can get random. I ran a chmod 755 /dev/hw_random /dev/hwrng in rc.local. If you are not running a VIA padlock machine, then there is another reason why you are not getting any random. Running Xwindows on a box should really fill up the random device with disk, mouse and keyboard events, so there is something seriously broken if you run out of random. Is there another device or application that you use that is providing lots of strong crypto that might be using up all the generated random? > point. However, it's been noted before that some implementations of > virtual private servers have a broken /dev/random that never returns > anything. Is your FC4 maybe running on one of those? True. With xen2 guests, I have also had problems in the past with randomness, but I believe those have been addressed now. I haven't had a problem with that in a long time. Tried using OTR for secure messaging and when ever my = friend sends me a msg through GAIM it sends it in HTML = format.

Well, the AOL messaging format *is* HTML (or something a lot like it). I seem to remember that, even when OTR isn't involved at all, if a gaim (or any other AIM client) sends things like bold or italics to a miranda user, the miranda user will see the HTML markup (indicating a bug in miranda). If my memory is in fact correct, that would probably explain what you're seeing. Are you using the miranda plugin, or otrproxy? - Ian From prettyinpink08@gmail.com Wed Jul 26 00:52:52 2006 From: prettyinpink08@gmail.com (jasmine baluyot) Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2006 07:52:52 +0800 Subject: [OTR-users] OTR for Gaim 2 Beta 3 Message-ID: <8bf3e48a0607251652k33c993d6yb42428a96ebca331@mail.gmail.com> ------=_Part_7275_25168060.1153871572437 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Hello :) After installing gaim2-otr-3.0.0.exe for gaim 2 beta 3, no plugin for otr was available on gaim. How do I enable the plugin for otr? As normal user, find the gaim-otr.so and type "ldd /path/to/gaim-otr.so" search through the list you get, and make sure that nothing is listed as "Not Found" on the right hand side. If it is, you need to make sure that libotr.so* and/or any other dependent libs are in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH or in /etc/ld.so.conf. -E From ian@cypherpunks.ca Wed Jul 26 16:43:58 2006 From: ian@cypherpunks.ca (Ian Goldberg) Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2006 11:43:58 -0400 Subject: [OTR-users] OTR for Gaim 2 Beta 3 In-Reply-To: <8bf3e48a0607251652k33c993d6yb42428a96ebca331@mail.gmail.com> References: <8bf3e48a0607251652k33c993d6yb42428a96ebca331@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <20060726154358.GQ17587@smtp.paip.net> On Wed, Jul 26, 2006 at 07:52:52AM +0800, jasmine baluyot wrote: > Hello :) > > After installing gaim2-otr-3.0.0.exe for gaim 2 beta 3, no plugin for otr > was available on gaim. Download http://www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/binaries/windows/gaim2b2-otr3.zip
and unzip it.  You'll find gaim-otr.dll, which you should just copy over

[The gaim2beta2 plugins works fine on gaim2beta3.]

We really will get around to making an actual release at some point,
though we still need to decide whether to keep supporting gaim 1.5 or
not.

Google suggest that's a normal Windows process (though I'd never heard of it before, not being a Windows user myself). I have no idea why it would choose to start when you start an encrypted session, unless it's triggered by libgcrypt's gathering of random entropy from system events. - Ian
